The industry works closely with the European Commission on energy efficiency objectives and good practices.
Voluntary agreements are the main tools for this. They are recognised by the European Commission when certain criteria are met such as: participation to the agreement is open to all stakeholders, the size of the market covered by the signatories is relevant enough, there is a high level of transparency and the agreements are monitored over time.
As a result of the close cooperation between industry and the institutions, two voluntary agreements are now in place: (1) the Complex Set-Top-Box voluntary agreement and the EU Broadband Code of Conduct version 6 . Both are managed by the Joint Research Center, the European Commission’s science and knowledge service. The two agreements lay down energy consumption requirements for complex set-top-boxes and broadband equipment in order to reduce their environmental impact.
