(Brussels,14 September 2016): Cable Europe, the Association representing broadband cable operators, supports the connectivity ambitions for Europe set out by the European Commission in its proposal “Towards Connectivity for a European Gigabit Society” published today.

The Commission has outlined a plan which builds on the existing connectivity targets for 2020 with further objectives for Gigabit connectivity by 2025.

European cable operators lead the way in building very high speed networks, and are already more than delivering the existing targets.  Investment in new technologies has continued to reap results for consumers, with cable’s Gigasphere standard now rolling out to bring cable networks to the next, future-proof  level.

Matthias Kurth, Executive Chairman of Cable Europe, said: “Two crucial drivers for growth work hand in hand.  Firstly, that we in Europe are relentless in our pursuit of ever improving quality parameters.  The European cable industry is investing, innovating, and leading the field in this regard.  Secondly, that policy and regulatory developments support an investment-friendly environment in line with this ambition.

“Our vibrant and highly competitive industry thrives on infrastructure competition, with challenger networks like cable stimulating ever greater product investment and driving take-up.  Regulatory incentives for investment, along with technology neutral policies, will pave the way to achieve our shared ambition for a digital Europe”.
